Pizza Tower began as a role-playing video game with survival horror elements before evolving into a platformer inspired by Nintendo's dormant Wario Land series, to which McPig wanted to provide a spiritual successor. The development began around March 2018 and was led by the pseudonymous designer McPig and programmer Sertif. Pizza Tower does not feature health or lives, and its difficulty depends on what the player chooses to achieve. At the end of each level, they activate an escape sequence and must return to the beginning within a time limit. Across 20 side-scrolling levels, the player increases their score by gathering collectibles and defeating enemies to build combos. It follows a pizza chef, Peppino Spaghetti, who must scale a tower to prevent the destruction of his pizzeria. On April 20th, 2022, following the massive popularity of the song online, a music video for the song was released, gaining over 350,000 views on YouTube in one month (shown below).Pizza Tower is a 2023 platform game created by the indie developer Tour De Pizza. Starting in mid-January, and other Twitter users posted video caption memes based on the song and its sped-up version, both reusing the clip from American Psycho and using other clips from this and other "based" films. In the following months, more viral TikToks using the song were uploaded to the app. The upload by gained further prominence in late October 2021 after several TikToks using it went viral (examples shown below). For example, a tutorial video by TikToker jannestwelve received over 1.6 million views and 231,000 likes in three months (shown below, center). The song did not achieve massive virality until July 23rd, 2021, when TikToker used the song in a fancam of actress Nikki Reed, which gained over 256,400 views and 22,900 likes in six months (shown below).
